Meet Kacey Musgraves in the “Midde of Nowhere”

Words by Katherine Cardinale

After exploring a variety of sounds throughout the duration of her musical career thus far, country pop darling Kacey Musgraves is returning to her country roots with her latest album, Middle of Nowhere. The record arrives just two years after the release of Deeper Well, which debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 200 and earned Kacey three GRAMMY nominations.

Middle of Nowhere was written while Kacey was single during a time of reflection and clarity after a breakup. The album was inspired by Kacey’s experiences of self-definition and isolation, hence its title. On March 7, 2026, Kacey began teasing her new era via Instagram posts that featured lyrics off the lead single, “Dry Spell.” The album’s official release date in early May was announced on March 11.

Middle of Nowhere opens with the title track, which lures the album’s listeners into the new world that Kacey has created. It was released as the second single off the record, which gave fans a great taste of what the album’s sound would be like. The next track, “Dry Spell,” served as the lead single of the album’s rollout. It’s a cheeky tune full of humorous metaphors, and was paired with a music video that included much of the same. This is not the first time Kacey has played into her sense of humor, see her viral Coachella performance from April 2019 or even more recently, her dressing up as a large armadillo in Walmart to promote Dry Spell.

Kacey also includes more traditionally melancholy songs, including “I Believe In Ghosts,” which is about the end of a relationship, and “Loneliest Girl,” which is about not dealing with other people’s drama, trauma, and other aspects of their lives; the theme of loneliness itself follows a common theme from Kacey’s past albums.

Another highlight of the album is “Mexico Honey,” which celebrates Mexican music and culture. The entire record has many Mexican-infused elements in its composition and production, which is a new sound for Kacey, who spoke about how much traditional Mexican music has impacted her music and herself during a recent interview with NPR. She specifically noted that she has always aimed to sonically explore all aspects of country music and its potential. She was interested in further investigating how traditional Mexican music intersects with the genre, and notes that Texas would not be the same without its heavy Mexican influences.

Kacey wraps up the album with “Hell on Me,” which is another melancholy song, this time a ballad. It references the song “angel” from her fourth album, star-crossed. In “Hell On Me,” Kacey thinks back through her lost relationship and discovers how much she has been blaming herself, as well as how much pain and hurt she has been experiencing the entire time without realizing it.

In addition to the standard album, a second version with two digital bonus tracks, “All My Exes (Kacey’s Version) and “Caballero,” was announced on May 5th, 2026. The addition of both songs completes the record perfectly.
Kacey is heading out on an arena tour in support of the record this fall, and you can buy tickets to any of her upcoming shows here.
