Ax and the Hatchetmen Enter New Era with the Release of “Loser”

Words by Izzy Abate

Exiting their “So Much To Tell You” Era, Ax and the Hatchetmen have entered a new era since their single release “Loser.”

“Loser” debuted on July 10th, 2026. Ax and the Hatchetmen seemed to use a new approach while keeping the fans satisfied with their classic Indie Alternative Rock feel. They have yet to confirm a new album, but fans are on their toes waiting to see what is next for this Chicago band.

The band parted ways with drummer Nick Deputy in April of 2026. This is the first release featuring their new drummer, Chaandon Croft. He was able to use his own drumming style mixed with the classic Ax and the Hatchetman feel, making this song feel new and improved. The song itself feels upbeat and happy, but the song features lyrics that are truly emotional and toxic. Singer Axel Ellis was really able to channel the poisonous traits in a romantic relationship. However, the song’s conflict is Man vs. Self rather than a conflict between two partners. He focuses on the self-aware idea of not being ready for a relationship but continuing to try anyway.

What makes not just the song but also the band unique is their distinctive brass section. Saxophonist Quinn Dolan and trumpeter Phil Pistone do a superb job of giving this single a unique feel.

One of the best lyrics of this single is during the bridge, where Ellis powerfully sings, “I’m a loser, I’ll lose her, I’ll beg for her then use her. Take my empty apologies but not my favorite sweater.” This section was promoted on social media previous to the release. It’s safe to say that fans were pleasantly surprised with the full song once it dropped.

This single features their go-to producer Jake Sinclair. Sinclair has worked with top chart bands like Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, and much more. He did such an excellent job using his own unique sound mixed with the indie, raw feeling of Ax and the Hatchetmen. The song was written by Jake Sinclair, DIY songwriter Lex Walton, and band members Axel Exllis, Salvatore Defilippis, Hunter Olshefke, and Chaandmon Croft.

Overall, Ax and the Hatchetmen left fans satisfied and eager for their future releases.
