Audrey Hobert Wants to Be Wanted — And We Absolutely Want More

Words by Katherine Cardinale

Audrey Hobert has been working behind the scenes for years, but now she’s setting out to be pop music’s next big thing. With a BFA from New York University, an array of songwriting credits, experience as a writer’s production assistant at Warner Brothers, and more, Audrey comes from quite the artistic background. On November 14, 2024, she posted a video on Instagram teasing a clip of original, unreleased music, which was positively received by the comments section, with followers being overwhelmingly in support of her latest endeavor. More clips of Audrey teasing her own songs trickled in through the rest of the year into 2025, and on April 22nd, the long-awaited announcement of her debut single, “Sue me,” was posted on her socials.

This rollout has not come to the shock of fans, many of whom primarily know Audrey to be the best friend of popular singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams. Audrey has artistically collaborated with Gracie in recent years in a multitude of ways — she has directed music videos for Gracie, co-written multiple songs with Gracie, and provided background vocals for Gracie’s sophomore album, The Secret of Us. Audrey has also notably worked with Malcom Todd, her brother, on his debut album, in addition to directing the music video for his song titled “Concrete.”

“Sue me” is a departure from Audrey’s collaborative projects and exists entirely in her own artistic world. The song is a pure pop anthem that is both upbeat and absolutely infectious. The repetitive chorus is just dying to be screamed in a car on a hot summer day with the sunroof wide open, and Audrey’s ability to write a simple but catchy hook is immediately evident on just the first listen through.

“And being a saint is exhausting

Sue me, I wanna be wanted

Sue me, I wanna be wanted

Sue me, I wanna be, sue me, I wanna be

Sue me, I wanna be wanted

Sue me, I wanna be wanted

Sue me, I wanna be wanted

Sue me, I wanna be, sue me, I wanna be

Sue me, I wanna be wanted”

The single is bold and blunt at the same time, and Audrey sings about the desire to be wanted with a tinge of lyrical edginess that particularly shines through in the verses and bridge. “Sue me” encapsulates the feeling of desperate yearning and it is thematically reminiscent of songs that Audrey has writing credits on, such as “Risk” and “That’s So True,” both of which are featured on Gracie Abrams’s The Secret of Us.

Just me or does he look amazing?

When he’s all in his Amazon basics?

Let’s rip them off, top to bottom

Let’s rock

Suddenly all the lights are on

Taking it as a sign from God (Sign from God)

And I’m saying it over and over again

This might be Audrey’s debut single, but it is clear that this is only the beginning of her musical journey as a solo artist. You can stream the new song wherever you get your music and watch the accompanying music video now!
