Photo Gallery and Show Review: girlpuppy in New York

Words and Photos by Jackie Grimson

Last week, girlpuppy (Becca Harvey) played a special show in New York City at Baby’s All Right commemorating the release of her sophomore album, Sweetness. Lyrical bittersweetness is an undercurrent of the new album, which features stories about falling out of love and realizing the person you were with wasn’t who you thought they were. This theme is reflected in Becca’s reserved but poignant vocals, as well as the dreamy production of her new album. Hearing these songs translated into live versions was an all-encompassing and emotional experience.

Opening the show was Shane T, a solo indie project based out of New York City. Following his performance was Brooklyn-based musician Scarlet Rae, whose dark and beautiful voice mixed with 90-inspired fuzzy guitars sounded like a forgotten gem from a bygone era. Scarlet is also a close friend of Becca’s.

Beginning with the fitting instrumental prelude “Intro,” Becca rushed onstage and was quickly joined by her band. They played several other new tracks off the new album, such as “Since April” and “I Think I Did.” Later on during the set, Scarlet Rae came back onstage to perform as a surprise guest. One of the final tracks performed at the show was “Beaches,” which was introduced with, “Do you mind if we get a little country?” The slide guitar mixed with the moving lyrics about falling out of love were a particular standout amongst the live versions from the new album.

You can listen to girlpuppy’s album here. Hopefully more tour dates will be soon to follow!
