Lisa, RAYE, and Doja Cat Collaborate on an Empowering New Single

Words by Kacie Bautista

Ready to be born again from this latest hit? Three of the music industry’s female powerhouses released the collaboration of the year with their newest single, “Born Again.” BLACKPINK’s LISA dropped her latest single on February 6, off of her highly anticipated debut album, Alter Ego, out February 28. The single, featuring British soul-R&B singer, RAYE, and hip-hop/rap star, Doja Cat, brings forth an edgy, disco-pop sound, filled with rhythmic drums, powerful base, and angelic harmonies. Accompanied by the song’s catchy instrumentals are the singers’ dynamic vocals that, when combined, create a hypnotic art piece on its own.

Each woman brings their individualistic and unique sounds on the record, making the listening experience exciting and anticipatory each time the song progresses. Their versatility also shines in this single as they shift between rap and melodic singing. Alongside the song itself, its partnering music video visually demonstrates the duality of femininity and strength, especially when we see the moment all three women walk together in tandem, arms linked, as they stare down the camera. The visuals throughout the video display stunning representations of female empowerment. In a social media post, Lisa writes, “this video is a tribute to powerful women throughout history.”

LISA also released her singles, “Rockstar,” “New Woman,” featuring ROSALíA, and “Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me)” off of her upcoming album, Alter Ego. After her discontinuation with BLACKPINK’S record label, YG Entertainment, Lisa began her solo music career under her own management, LLOUD. The new music label was her way to “showcase [her] vision in music and entertainment” and “push new boundaries.” Her music continues to indeed push boundaries whether sonically or visually, leaving her fans excited to meet the various sides of her as an artist.

Her latest single, “Born Again,” is no exception—It proves to be a new and refreshing sound from other singles we’ve heard from LISA so far. Yet it adds to her recent music’s themes of self-empowerment, strength and independence. The single talks of a woman’s power to make their lover feel “born again,” though from the perspective of heartbreak. If they’d “tried just a little more times,” the ex-lover would have been “believers in something greater.” While the song captures the story of a lost love, it embraces the ability to grow stronger and stand up taller when we fall.
