Words cut deep in Julia Michaels’ newest single, “Scissors,” featuring Maren Morris. Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, Julia Michaels collaborates a second time with country and pop singer, Maren Morris on a dreamy, pop record and sister music video, available to watch and listen now. Though lyrically, the song wears a bold and cunning attitude, embodying the perfect, light hearted breakup anthem.
Michaels has worked with Morris in the past where she featured on and co-wrote the record, “Cut!” from the latter’s 2024 EP, Intermission. In 2022, Michaels also co-wrote “Circles Around This Town” for Morris on her 2022 album, Humble Quest. But Michaels has written songs for countless big-name singers, including Britney Spears, Ed Sheeran, Selena Gomez and Sabrina Carpenter. Her talent for creating memorable hits, both in her expressive and poignant writing and her ear for catchy hooks has been noticed since her teen years. At only 18, Michaels had decided to “cold pitch” a song for Disney’s upcoming series, Austin & Ally. That song had ended up becoming the opening theme for one of the most popular shows on Disney Channel. As her career grew, so did her reputation for writing some of the most popular songs in music history within the last decade. Songs like “Sorry,” by Justin Bieber and “Close” by Nick Jonas and Trove Lo continued to earn her the respect and trust of many artists, and has led to several award nominations. Michaels has also written her own music throughout her career, including her Grammy-nominated records, “Issues,” and “If the World Was Ending,” and albums, Nervous System, Inner Monologue Part 1 and 2 and Not in Chronological Order. Her recent project had been creating the soundtrack for the Disney movie, Wish, making her the “youngest ever songwriter to score an entire Disney feature” at age 30.
On Friday, January 10, Michaels released her newest single, “Scissors,” featuring Maren Morris. A blend of light acoustics and pop beats, the song takes on the comedic juxtaposition of witty, cut-throat lyricism and dreamy instrumentals about figuratively (and quite literally) cutting off an ex. “Scissors is a funny way of saying that I’m unbothered,” says Michaels in a Rolling Stone interview. “My skin is thick. I’m not pressed if someone wants to leave.” Morris adds, “Not everything ends in heartbreak but sometimes apathy and lightheartedness.” Leaning more on the mischievous and playful side, this record will have you singing and dancing, even with the urge to “cut ties.” The single’s joint music video is also not one to miss, with its vibrant visuals and modern L.A. dream-home setting. Check out the song and music video, available to stream now—and make sure your sensory cues are sharpened.
